| EASYREADS are a new range of full-colour, non-fiction graded readers; the subjects naturally have to do with art, history, science, geography, biography and cultural studies. Young people studying English at middle school will find it both fun and rewarding to read in English about other subjects. Teachers, too, will find the cross-curricular approach stimulating. Indeed, content-based learning, or ‘Content and Language Integrated Learning’, is becoming increasingly popular in many parts of the world. But these books are by no means exclusively for use in schools: the adult or young adult general reader at elementary or early pre-intermediate level (levels A1/A2 of the Common European Framework) will find the choice of subjects so interesting and the presentation so attractive that motivation to read in English will be practically guaranteed. EASYREADS are specially written at two levels, with controlled grammatical structures and lexis: level 1 uses present tenses only, while level 2 introduces past tenses. As far as lexis is concerned, apart from some special vocabulary required by the topic of the reader, the maximum number of headwords used at level 1 is 300 words, increasing to 400 words at level 2. The lavish visual support – specially commissioned artwork, photographs, period illustrations – both aids the comprehension of the written text and tempts the learner into reading in English. In addition, there is a topic-specific illustrated glossary at the back of each book for easy reference. EASYREADS are ideal for extensive reading: with books at this manageable length (24/32 pages) and controlled language it is easy to feel a sense of real progress as books are started and rapidly finished. But intensive reading is not ignored: students looking for explicit language exercises will find a variety of activities which check comprehension (including an exit test at the end of the book) and provide skills-work, often in the style of University of Cambridge ESOL KET questions. Suggestions for internet projects are included, as well.
